The Art Installation Inspired By Tinder

Art

After curating the hugely popular Intermission Project last year, Georgia ‘‘ Goodnow is back with a solo exhibition responding to a series of intimate experiences she’s had over the past year across the United States and Australia.

Opening tonight at in Abbotsford, all started with a message from a Tinder match…

7th June, 2019

‘Shared spaces of intimacy are like second skins. They take on characteristics of their inhabitants and contain collective memories,’ tells Goodie. Photo – .

‘Life is complicated, love is complicated, gender is complicated.’ – Goodie.

‘I’m the little spoon,’ wrote the match.

This message, along with other encounters, has inspired ’s latest exhibition, .

Opening tonight in Melbourne, it explores love and the shapes it takes, as well as the spaces that house our feelings, thoughts, doubts and desires. ‘Private and public, platonic and romantic, domestic and professional, personal and political: complicated and never simple dichotomies dance in contemporary relationships against a background of social media, dating apps, and uncertainty,’ tells Goodie.

Her insights play out across an installation of watercolour-on-paper artworks and sculptures. These elements have been created at Goodie’s studio space at Weirs Lane Studios, North Melbourne. ‘I’ve been massaging and taping salvaged cardboard into shapes to create a bed, shoes, limbs and a curtain etc, to create a bedroom scene,’ she explains.

The show is highly personal – the product of a year’s worth of reflecting on relationships, sexuality, gender, and spaces of intimacy. ‘While it is liberating to make work that shares and celebrates these reflections, it has also been a lot to process. Life is complicated, love is complicated, gender is complicated. And yet we have tethers,’ Goodies shares. ‘In the process, I’ve shed some shame, doubt and fear, embraced aspects of myself, and found ways to make work that talks about queerness, polyamory, tinder, and emoji more openly’.

It’s empowering to see that which is typically behind closed doors, figuratively and literally, put on public display.
