Fancy Fitzroy digs for Flack Studio

Work Space

Man, we only just started this ‘Work Space’ column last month and I’m already inspired for a total interior makeover at TDF HQ (a task for 2018, perhaps!?)

Today we share the truly incredible new Fitzroy workspace of local design firm, !

The ever-on-trend Mr Flack gives us the low-down on his team’s inspired refurbishment of an old 1920’s electroplating factory in Fitzroy.

‘I took the advice I give my clients, if you are going to do it, do it once and well!’ – David Flack.

Back in early 2015 we first profiled interior designer David Flack. We were convinced he was the ‘next big thing’ in Australian interior design, and by golly, were we on the money!

After cutting his teeth working for revered Melbourne designer Kerry Phelan, in November 2014, David launched . Just three years later, his team has grown to seven, and after outgrowing their previous premises, the studio recently shifted to a new HQ, in an old 1920’s factory building in Melbourne’s Fitzroy.

Inevitably, when an interiors design studio known for their striking, colour saturated aesthetic gets the opportunity to create their own workspace from scratch…  it’s not likely to be an exercise in restraint! ‘We wanted the space to feel very Flack, it had to be bold, yet calm and of course approachable’ David mentions. The result is big on colour, texture and lux details – including a persian Travertine feature wall, and a green marble powder room!

Set within a relatively modest 120 square metre space, the office fosters collaboration, with various breakout spaces to get staff away from their desks. The central focus, taking up almost half of the space, is the studio’s extensive finishes library, which doubles as one of two presentation spaces – ‘this allows for a collaborative relationship with our clients and designers’ David explains.

The build took roughly ten weeks, and though it was a significant investment for the business, David says this distinctive fit-out was paying dividends within its first week. ‘We found an instant engagement between the space and potential new clients. From the moment you enter it is pretty apparent what we are about – we love, design, colour, detail and engaging spaces.’
